PREFACE

Objective English for Competitive Examinations is designed exclusively for students of competitive examinations. The ‘English Language’ section in these examinations assess a candidate’s ability on various aspects including comprehension, vocabulary, verbal analogy, sentence skills, grammar, usage and the like.

COVERAGE

In this book the coverage of topics is as follows:

•Comprehension Passages—Reading comprehension tests assess your understanding and retention of any written passage. These tests are of three basic types and each type is covered in detail.

•Spotting Errors—This section involves identifying errors in sentences. Answering questions on spotting errors require an awareness of the basic rules of grammar and usage. There are many types like Errors in Sentence Fragments, Identifying the Correct Sentence, Choosing the Incorrect Sentence and so on.

•Cloze Tests—These tests are a type of passage completion and consists of numbered blanks followed by answer choices. Cloze tests facilitates sentence-building skills.

•Sentence Skills—This section contributes immensely to effective writing. It includes four major types—Sentence Improvement, Sentence Arrangement, Sentence Completion and Sentence Fillers.

•Verbal Analogy—These are aptitude tests to measure the candidate’s English language abilities and skills. Verbal analogy tests are of various kinds and involves both primary and secondary relationship.

•Vocabulary—These tests assess your language proficiency and include Synonyms, Antonyms, Word Substitutions, Idioms and Phrasal Verbs, and Spelling.

•Solved Question Papers—This last section includes solved papers of various competitive examinations.
